Space is a domain of international competition and of fast-paced commercial exploitation.  Protecting and utilising the space domain has become a vital issue of national security for all space-faring nations. The ability to operate in space is crucial for earth observation, national intelligence collection, military communications, civil telecommunications, precision navigation and digital time-keeping. Space is critical infrastructure.

This masterclass will examine the nature of threats to the peaceful utilisation of space. It will consider Canada’s standing as a space power, the opportunities we might seize on, and the vulnerabilities that the space domain presents.

Instructor

Wesley WarkWesley Wark is an expert on national security and intelligence issues, in both a Canadian and international context.

He is a fellow of the Balsillie School of International Affairs, a professor emeritus at the University of Toronto/Munk School of Global Affairs, and a senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation, in Waterloo, where he co-directed a major project on Canadian National Security Strategy.

Intensive, three-hour class divided into key topic components.
